Increase Lung Capacity

By nicole wilsone at 2010-06-30 07:14:05
If you have been following my articles you know I am really into getting in shape for summer. Naturally along with dieting and natural diet supplements I am exercising more. It is easy to become fatigued and out of breathe if you are running, biking, or increasing any number of cardio activities. If you want to keep your stamina up and increase your lung capacity there are actually all natural products available to help you do this!

Lung capacity--your body's ability to take in oxygen and distribute it to your cells--is what gives you your energy and vitality. Low lung capacity means you won't be able to exercise well. A very low lung capacity can lead to a loss of your independence as things like walking up a flight of stairs or carrying groceries in from the car become too taxing to face.

Increasing your breathing capacity has many benefits. For instance, if you have more breathing capacity, you can absorb more oxygen in one breathe. This means that you have more oxygen and energy for your muscles to work harder than normal.

There are 12 sets of respiratory muscles that control breathing. Just like any other muscle in the body, these become fatigued and overexerted, resulting in out of breath condition, gasping for air, etc. This happens to every athlete who pushes themselves to their limit, and to anyone who overexerts themselves in daily activity. Clearly, it is not just a state of breathlessness or overexertion that we should be concerned with. Regular natural breathing is controlled by these muscles as well.

Put all that out of your head for the moment. The most important thing is that you breathe comfortably. Do what feels right. Your body breathes instinctively - even while you're sleeping, your lungs and corresponding muscles are going through the motions. Running while breathing does not have to be complicated. As long as oxygen is entering your respiratory system, you're doing okay.

Avoid pollution and smoking:Pollution like car vehicle exhausts and smoking significantly shrink your lungs and hence capacity. Hence, you should avoid these as much as you can as they have a big affect on your breathing capacity.

Regular exercise is a great way to help keep your respiratory system strong. Anyone can improve their lung capacity to a degree by exercise that tends to use the large muscles of the body in a rhythmic motion. Moving consistently increases the demand for oxygen and therefore so does the rate of breathing.

Breathing can either help or hinder your performance in many ways, whether you are a professional athlete looking for peak performance or if you are a senior looking climb stairs better. If you are unsure of the seriousness of your breathing problems, a conversation with a respiratory therapist or physician is advised.

In conclusion, breathing comfortably is paramount. When you're ready, try introducing some lung strengthening exercises into your workout. Start out with some light nose-breathing and work your way up, one breath at a time. In time, your breathing will become natural and intuitive. Good luck and be safe.
