Food Myths

Deciding to eat healthy, nutritious and truly natural food is one of the best things you can do for your quality of life. Decision made, you would think determining the quality of the food you eat would be a fairly straightforward process. No so -- the facts about nutrition and eggs are yet another example of what we come to call 'a food myth.'

Foods labeled 'low fat' or 'reduced fat' just means they have around 30% less fat than the standard choices but that still may mean they contain fat. Low fat foods often contain a lot of sugar to make up the taste or unhealthy carbohydrate substitutes. Plus, if something is labeled 'low fat', you might be inclined to eat more of it.

All food addiction is a mental disorder. While there are indeed situations where bad food habits are mentally/emotionally based, the fact is that the industrialized American food supply is designed to be addictive. Agri-biz, big chemical, and big pharma have been in bed together since at least the 1940's.

Losing that unwanted and excess weight is a serious challenge for many of us, and for me at one time in my life was to, in part because of all the confusing glut of information and misinformation we're constantly exposed to on day to day consistency. Again it's not the carbs making you fat, it's the total number of calories you consume versus the number you expend. Carbohydrates are an important part of a well-rounded healthy diet.

By reducing your intake of energy dense carbohydrates, which consist of large slices of white bread, rice, pasta, cakes and biscuits, will certainly help in weight loss. However, eating too few carbohydrates can starve the muscles for long periods of time and thereby reduce the metabolic rate, so the body becomes less effective at burning energy and losing weight.

The 'starvation' effect is well known amongst dieters. It is where the body starts to burn less calories to perform every day functions, instead leaving the person tired and lacking in energy. It is important that you take on board the idea that there are no negative calorie foods. Whilst people may make these claims they have never managed to back it up with scientific fact and research.

The idea that Italy consumes vast quantities of meat is another Italian food myth. There are a few exceptions, however most Italians do not enjoy a great deal of meat. Plain meats, such as a grilled steak, are rarely consumed. When meat dishes are prepared, they tend to combine lots of flavors and vegetables.

The second myth that needs busting is that if you eat all raw food you will never get ill. This is simply not true, although generally speaking eating lots of first-class raw foods certainly keeps people healthier and more able to shake off things than the average diet.

Those are some of the most popular food myths you yourself might hear from your friends at the gym. You must keep in mind that gaining muscles isn't entirely a food-based game but rather a system. It's a combination or right food/supplements, training and rest.
