An arrhythmia is a change in the rhythm of your heartbeat. Most people have experienced these occasional, brief irregular heartbeats that feel like a skipped, fluttering or racing heartbeat. Cardiac dysrhythmia is technically more correct, as arrhythmia would imply that there is "no rhythm," but this term is not used frequently. An arrhythmia occurs when the normal electrical cycle of the heart is disturbed. Normally, tiny currents activate the upper part of the heart, just before the bottom part of the heart, which are the muscular chambers that pump blood around the body. The most common cause is coronary artery disease, especially a heart attack, which interferes with the conduction system. Another common cause is an overactive thyroid (a gland in the neck that produces a hormone that controls the rate of the body's chemical reactions).

Sinus arrhythmia is the most common form of arrhythmia that occurs in middle-aged adults. With the advent of age, the conditions of arrhythmia increases. The symptoms exuded include dizziness or light-headedness, feeling of breathlessness. Advances in medicine and technology have created new treatment options for cardiac arrhythmia (commonly known as heart rhythm disturbances). Cardioversion is the application of electrical current across the chest wall to the heart and it is used for treatment of supraventricular or pulsed ventricular tachycardia. When a person is suffering with sinus arrhythmia, variations of heartbeats happen. Heartbeats can go from one abnormal pace to another. The heart may beat very slowly one minute, then suddenly pick up the pace, and possibly go into an extended pause mode before attempting to correct the problem.

Sinus arrhythmia should not be confused with sinus bradycardia. Sinus arrhythmia affects the vagus nerve which activates the nervous system which controls the heart beat resulting in the failure of medulla oblongata. It sends wrong signals to the heart decreasing the heart rate. Antiarrhythmics are drugs that are prescribed to modify the rhythm of your heartbeat. If the pace is too quick, they can slow it down. If the pace is too slow, they can speed it up. In the former case (for example, with atrial fibrillation), beta blockers and digoxin are often used. This medical condition actually impacts the vagus nerve which in effect lends a major contribution to the irregularities of the heart beat.

Most arrhythmias are not life threatening and can be ignored. But some can be signs of a more serious problem and needs to be acted upon. Several drugs are available to remedy this condition but they have to be properly calibrated for the specific condition a patient is experiencing. Any heart abnormality could be life-threatening if the problem persists. A woman with severe cardiac arrhythmia could experience cardiac arrest or even sudden death.
